Symmetries and conservation laws. Abstract group theory. Theory of representations. Point groups. Space groups. Perturbation theory. Hydrogen atom and Runge-Lenz vector. Molecular states. Molecular vibrations. Crystal-field. Jahn-Teller theorem. Wigner-Eckart theorem. Selection rules. Bloch theorem and band structure from group theory. Spin-orbit and double groups. Kramers theorem. Time reversal symmetry. Magnetic groups. Many-electron states, statistic and symmetries. Atomic multi-electron states and multiplets. Chiral systems. Topological properties. Broken symmetry and Goldstone modes.

Learning Goals:

Students will become acquainted with group theory and its most important applications in contemporary solid state physics. They especially serve as preparation for the Master's thesis.
