# Physics and Mathematics of Geometric Phases

## Lecture details

The lecture will be given by Prof. Honerkamp, Prof. Wegewijs and Dr. Pletyukhov

Geometric and topological concepts play an increasingly important role in the physics of condensed matter systems.

This course discusses:

**(1) Geometry & topology in electronic bandstructure**

following “A Short Course on Topological Insulators” by Asbóth, Oroszlány, Pályi

(Symmetry-protected topological phases, edge states,

bulk-boundary correspondence, dimensional reduction,

winding- and Chern- topological invariants, Wannier states,

polarization, time-reversal symmetry, topological quantization of transport)

**(2) Selected examples from other areas in physics**

(Classical physics, gauge theory, magnetism, electron pumping,

topological order, Majorana states, quantum error correction)

**(3) Relevant background in differential geometry**

following “Geometry, topology, physics” by Nakahara

(Topology, homology, homotopy, manifolds, differential forms,

fiber bundles, connections, Chern classes, Chern-Simons forms)
